Paper, Vanilla, Fabric or Forge: choose Minecraft server software
Use Vanilla for an unmodified Java server, Paper for compatible plugins, and Fabric or Forge for mods made for that loader. A modpack must match both the loader and Minecraft version.
When should I choose Paper or Vanilla?
Vanilla is the original Minecraft Java server software. Paper supports its plugin ecosystem and offers server configuration and performance options. Check each plugin against your exact Minecraft and Paper version; a Forge or Fabric mod is not a Paper plugin.
When should I choose Fabric or Forge?
Choose the loader required by your mods or modpack. Match the Minecraft version, loader version and mod dependencies. Many content mods must also be installed by players; some server-side mods do not need a client installation. Follow the instructions supplied by the mod or pack author.
What happens when I change versions?
Stop the server and download a backup first. Changing the core or downgrading Minecraft can make worlds, mods or plugins incompatible. Review the installation mode shown in the panel and keep your original backup until you have successfully joined and checked the world.
Do I have to install Java myself?
For software installed through the supported game-panel version selector, the panel selects the required Java image. A manually uploaded custom JAR or modpack may have different requirements: check its documentation and the startup settings. Follow installation progress and errors in the console.
How much RAM and CPU should I choose?
Start with your pack requirements, plugins, view distance and expected activity. There is no reliable fixed player count for a given RAM size. Monitor memory and server tick performance during exploration and world generation, and compare the live plan resources before ordering.
